KEN VANDERMARK AND TIM DAISY

Ken Vandermark and Tim Daisy have been performing, recording, and touring together in a number of groups based in Chicago since 2001, including The Vandermark 5, The Resonance Ensemble, The Frame Quartet, and Topology. Performing as a duo they concentrate on investigating the possibilities of free improvisation, utilizing their combined experiences with a wide variety of improvised and composed music that they've explored over the last decade. By drawing on numerous influences, such as American and European free jazz, experimental rock, free improvisation, soul and funk as well as 20th century contemporary music and visual art, they integrate their creative energies to further explore and assemble sound in a spontaneous context. Tim and Ken aim to make each performance unique by tirelessly searching for new ways to keep the music fresh and encouraging each other to play beyond their potential.

“ Vandermark’s done more to further jazz music over the last two decades than seems humanly possible.” – Chad Radoford – Creative Loafing

“Daisy has a delightful knack for swinging and decorating at the same time, so that no matter how dense and aggressive his laying becomes, there’s a resting spot somewhere in the groove”. - Bill Meyer Signal To Noise

Colloquy

Colloquy creates direction based music with lots of improvisation between 2-3 instruments, in an effort to create music that uses the jazz aesthetic with classical and non-classical instruments. Originally started as a duo project, we have recorded and performed music for violin and cello, electric violin and electric guitar, and violin, cello and trumpet. We are interested in improvisation, but also communicating stories and having compositional input that directs and leads, but doesn't dictate. Our music is sometimes structured or has limitations but also at times will be freely improvised. Our goal is to create interesting, immediate, improvised music that can be appreciated by the music scholar and the music fan alike.
